5 reasons why the cat often began to drink a lot of water

If the cat began to drink more than usual. 3 main reasons

Cat diabetes
Kidney disease
Diseases of the thyroid gland
Any of these diseases are easily diagnosed with a blood test and mine in the veterinary laboratory. All of these diseases are treatable if detected in time. If the tests are normal, then nothing to worry about.

The cat has become more and drink and write?
If the cat began to drink more and write more often, then the reason may be in serious illness. The good news is that with timely diagnosis and timely treatment, the health of the cat can often be maintained.

Top 5 reasons why a cat drinks more often
Kidney disease (kidney failure)
Hyperthyroidism (hyperthyroidism)
Diabetes
Diarrhea (diarrhea)
Switching from wet to dry food
The last point is usually fairly obvious, but it is really surprising how much the cat drinks more when switching from wet to dry. Diarrhea is also a fairly obvious reason for the greater need of cats for water.

Whatever the cause, excessive consumption of water by a cat is a serious enough cause for concern. Any change in the cat’s behavior almost never happens without a reason.

On the diseases of the kidneys of cats is worth a little more.

Kidney failure (CRF) cats
Kidney disease in cats is the most common cause of cat drinking more often than usual, and the most common disease in older cats. Most cat owners will sooner or later face this disease in their pets, it is worth being ready for it.

Renal failure in cats: prognosis
Proper treatment of kidney problems in cats depends on the stage of the disease and the unique characteristics of the particular cat. Treatment can be difficult and different in two different cats with chronic renal failure.

Diagnosis of Kidney Failure in Cats
A blood test and urine – first. It is impossible to make an accurate diagnosis without these tests. This is due to the fact that we need to find out exactly whether CKD is the cause of dehydration. To do this, we measure the concentration of urine. A blood test for chronic renal failure will show problems related to the condition: low potassium levels or high levels of phosphorus.
Measuring blood pressure of a cat. Cats with chronic renal failure often suffer from hypertension. If left untreated, they may become blind due to retinal detachment, and kidney disease with elevated pressure is much more difficult.
Sterile urine culture. Infectious diseases of the kidneys in cats are more common than can be imagined, and it is recommended to exclude them when they are treated and, if detected, to be treated.
The level of protein \ creatinine in the urine. A reduced urine protein content is a sign of damage to the glomeruli of the kidneys, which can be corrected by a simple drug treatment.
Treatment of kidney failure in cats
Treatment is always individual and depends on the results of the tests and the state of the cat.

The most important part of treatment is the transition to a special therapeutic diet. You can choose and buy food for cats with renal insufficiency in our veterinary pharmacy.
Special medicinal foods reduce the level of phosphorus in the cat’s blood. This, as well as special ingredients in these feeds, can significantly improve the condition of the cat.

There are several medications for treating renal failure in cats. Most cats need only some of them.

Drugs for treating renal failure in cats
Phosphate-binding drugs are needed if one therapeutic diet, shown in chronic renal failure, is not enough to reduce blood phosphorus
Special supplements with potassium are struggling with increased kidney loss of this electrolyte.
Preparations containing benazepril or telmisartan reduce glomerular hypertension of the kidneys.
Antihypertensive drugs, such as amlodipine, are used with high blood pressure.
Appetite stimulants help keep the cat’s weight normal, especially in the late stages of the disease.
The most important thing is constant monitoring of the cat’s condition. You can’t just “wait and watch” with a cat that may have kidney problems. If the cat has chronic renal failure, the sooner treatment begins at the veterinarian – urologist, the greater the chances for recovery.

Early diagnosis of renal failure is even more important.

If your cat starts to drink more, even if it does not lose weight, bring it to a veterinary clinic for a checkup!

Maybe the cat is completely healthy, and maybe this will save her life!
