VETERINARIAN REFERRAL INFORMATION

AVIM is conveniently located in both

Towson (Greater Baltimore region) and Annapolis.

AVIM provides your patients and clients with advanced care in the fields of internal medicine and oncology.  Most of our clients come as a  result of referrals from local veterinarians. You remain a part of the ongoing team efforts for the patient's veterinary care.

We strive to provide our services while supporting the unique relationship between the referring veterinarian and the pet's owner.  You will notice in our marketing that we always recommend discussion  bewteen you and your client before the client makes appointments with AVIM.  There are times when this goal can be taxed, but we do make every effort allowed by the situation to maintain the intended path.  We like to think of ourselves as the internal medicine practice that you would want for your own pet.

AVIM strives to maintain excellent communications between the client, referring veterinarian and the attending specialist. We do this through a variety of means that include referral summary letters via postal mail, electronic mail, fax and phone calls to you.  Please take a look at our strategic goals page to get a sense of who we are at AVIM !

If you wish to refer one of your patients to us, please contact us at 410-224-0121 for our Annapolis location or 410-828-0911 for our Towson location. Our referral form is shared by CVRC but you are welcome to provide your own summary, and in particular, your specific concerns for the case.  This form can be mailed to your office or is available here at :

You may also email Dr. Hitt, as the managing partner of AVIM, LLC at mhitt@avim.us for non-emergent questions, suggestions and concerns.

Here are common reasons for referring one of your patients to us:

  • An uncommon disease is detected
  • A second opinion is needed
  • An outcome was unexpected
  • Diagnostic assistance is needed
  • Sophisticated diagnostic or therapeutic procedures in the field of internal medicine or oncology are needed
  • Multiple conditions are present requiring a multi-disciplinary approach
  • 24-hour monitoring is needed

What you should experience:  The doctors of AVIM hope to develop a relationship with you that reflects personal trust and our high quality of services.  If requested prior to seeing the patient, we will try to answer as best we can your questions about potential  options and costs for our services.  As referral medicine is sought more often, it is less common for preliminary calls to have to be made between referring veterinarian and the specialist.  Please call first if you prefer or feel it would be of value in our understanding of the situation.  It is not our policy to give  recommendations to clients prior to an appointment .  Without  first seeing the patient, we would not be able to determine the extent of required services and, consequently, would not be able to project precise costs.  In order  to fulfil the intent of the veterinary practice act of the State of Maryland, we will not  offer direct recommendations to a client ahead of  establishing a proper patient-client-veterinary relationship. This is for your protection as well as the patient's.  At the time of the office visit, we do provide an in-depth estimate of cost to the pet owner for review prior to the provision of care. After the visit and appropriate therapeutic or diagnostic procedures have been performed we will follow with case updates for you.  Direct phone calls at that time are generally made if the situation is critical, unique or there has been a notable change in direction of the situation.  Generally within 24 hours, a referral summary letter is faxed and mailed to you. We use a "CommForm" to subsequently follow up with you.  These offer a more abbreviated/direct style for conveying new information about  test results and  evolving plans for patient treatment and monitoring.  Excellent communications are a primary goal of AVIM.
